IT Operations Management

IT Operations Management is one of the three primary ITIL functions that are defined in the Service Operation volume of the new ITIL v3.

A function is a concept that can be used to describe a collective of people, process and tools that carry out a specific activity, task or process.

Operations Management as a function is responsible for daily operational activities. In a business sense this could be related to restaurant staff and chefs who perform the function of cooking and serving in a restaurant.

In an IT sense the activities performed by this group will include backups, verification of backups and restores, print management, scheduling batch jobs and general facilities management (e.g. server room housekeeping, air conditioner & fire protection system checks and coordinating authorized maintenance and certification).

IT Operations Management will have standard operating procedures (SOPs) defined for a wide variety of their tasks.
