Pain Value Analysis
Several problem solving techniques are described in the ITIL v3 Problem Management process volume.
One of these techniques is the Pain Value Analysis .
Rather than being a problem solving technique the Pain Value Analysis permits a more scientific approach to decide which problems should be worked on as a matter of priority
The Pain Value Analysis technique works by looking at important issues to the business (e.g. number of people affected, cost to the business, expected duration of service downtime).
These factors are then applied to a particular problem to get a weighted view of the criticality of that problem.
Once all problems have been analyzed there is a scientific determination of which problems should be addressed and not just a personal prefernce.
