Failure Modes and Effect Analysis

Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA) is defined in the new Service Strategy text of ITIL version 3 as a way to analyse the potential impact of a failure to a nominated configuration item (CI).

This proactive troubleshooting method was previously defined as CFIA (Component Failure Impact Analysis).

FMEA is a technique that is of particular use to ‘recovery’ processes; namely Information Security, IT Service Continuity and Availability Management.

FMEA is also a technique that can be used as part of a Business Impact Analysis (BIA) to aide in the development of a business case to help justify increased expenditure for suspect components.
